In December 1891,  James Naismith, YMCA training school physical education teacher decided to adapt then known children’s game called duck-on-a-rock where small stone is thrown at a made-up duck positioned on the big rock. The aim was to knock off the duck.

James Naismith was told to invent a new game that could be played indoors during cold weather in Massachusetts. So the reason why was basketball invented is really practical one. All basketball fans should be thankful for cold weather in Massachusetts.
