Five Fundamental Skills Of Basketball

There are a few fundamental skills that a professional basketball player should portray. In the world, there are some professionals; Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Magic Johnson who handles the ball, pass the ball, shoot the ball, rebound or play defense giving out their best skills. These are rare basketball players that do play at the highest level.

In case you are interested in playing basketball professionally, must follow and get tips from professional basketball players, or you have to excel in these skills and techniques. However, you have to excel in one skill or two to get a chance in a basketball court. If you get to have the five skills, the sky will be the limit.

Basketball is an enjoyable game that most people would love to play. It’s, therefore, essential to have the skills needed to prove you are the best. In the article, we are highlighted the fundamental skills essential in basketball:

  1. Dribbling

The professionals dribble and control basketball as if they are playing on a string. As a player, you need to have good skills of dribbling the ball. When dribbling, one should use fingertips and not palm.

In the basketball court, you need to dribble when your head is up for you to clearly view the pitch. Here, you can see the opponent and teammates properly. You have also to keep the body low while using off-ball hand to keep the defender at bay. Dribbling requires working with both hand, and you feel comfortable moving all sides.

  • Passing

For a professional basketball player, you need good skills of passing the ball. Here, you can anticipate where your teammate will go or what the defender can do. You have, therefore, to master the basics. The moves you do are not for show, but give your team a chance for scoring.

  • Shooting

As a basketball player, it will be difficult for you to score, and especially when you can’t shoot that ball effectively. Shooting will be an art to master to have a knack for it.

Any player is entitled to improve in the shooting because it’s an essentials skill needed in the pitch. You will, therefore, need to practice to get proper techniques like squaring the body, shooting basketball with fingertips, putting backspin, and ensuring the elbows aren’t flying.

  • Rebounding

Rebounding makes one tall and with the ability of jumping and therefore a desire. You can be small for forward but having rebounding skills, you are fit for the position.

When rebounding, there is boxing out – blocking the opponent –that makes one a good rebounder. If you want to do rebounding, ensure you focus and maintain concentration.

  • Defense

Sometimes, the best scorers also play at shooting slumps. To play good defense, you need to understand and hustle both defense team. If you want to defend a player, ensure your head is lower than his, be close enough to offend and bother him. However, you also have to remember that there are other players in that court. So, while playing defense, you have to ensure that teammate don’t loses opponent.

I planned to write a review for this Nike Pure Grip basketball shortly after I bought it from the store, but it happened that time passed by and I write it after more than 6 months of use. So in the picture you see how the ball looks like used.

At first my impression was not that good for basketball named “Pure Grip” because first time playing it outside it didn’t feel very grippy at all. But after the dust settled in it started to get some grip. You can palm this ball even if you don’t have big hands like Shaq because it has really deep seams. After playing some time you get sweaty hands and that adds grip as well.

It is also quite soft ball even if you inflate it tight, not everyone liked it at the court but I like softer basketballs because they tend to be absorbed by the rim more easily.

In winter I took it to play inside and if there is several balls to choose almost everyone tries it for dunking, so it is much grippier than Molten or other balls.

I play almost everyday so you can’t expect it to last forever. After 3 or so months it starts to wear a bit and loose its texture and color. After all its still a decent ball for dunking or shooting some treys.

If you look for a ball to play pick up games outside or practice dunking, Pure Grip is a proper ball to buy.

Bellow are some more pics of how the Pure Grip ball looks used.

Many people including David Aldridge thinks that Jonas Valanciunas height is 7″2 or at least 7 feet. However judging from recently taken screenshot of VTB United League final 4 event in Vilnius (2012 May 3) Jonas was standing next to 7 footer George Zidek and 212cm (6’11.5″) Darjus Lavrinovic looking visibly smaller than both of them. Next to Lavrinovic from the left was standing Andrei Kirilenko, who is 6′ 9″ and looks about even to Valanciunas. Unless Jonas manage to grow taller during this summer he will be referred as 7 footer but really would be undersized like Dwight Howard against real 7 footers like Bynum or Gasol. Athleticism and huge wingspan will surely come in handy for Jonas in NBA, he himself referred as having 229 cm (7’6″) wingspan but draft measurements showed “only” 7’4″

New photo from Fiba 2014 World Cup. We can see that Valanciunas didn’t grow during his years in NBA and remained the same height between 6’10 – 6’11”
