Rajon Rondo has some big hands. Even NBA commentators joked that Rajon Rondo needs hand reduction surgery to be able to shoot free throws more accurately. Look yourself at Rajon Rondo’s hands.

From this angle it looks like his little finger ir longer than his index finger, that’s really unusual. But it can be just bad angle and his index finger is in the movement in this picture.

You what’s gonna happen in this situation to poor Fisher. Rajon Rondo use his hand size to block the shot.

I remember that when people say their height with shoes they always underestimate (in my opinion) how much height do shoes add. Half an inch is their maximum number but this is obvious not true because even casual shoes have thicker soles not talking about basketball shoes which has even bigger soles. So to end the question how much height do shoes add to a person I decided to do a little test with my basketball shoes. So far I have outworn Nike Jetter Vital, average condition Nike Zoom BB, almost new custom made Nike Kobe IV and some Adidas basketball shoes which I bought really long ago but never really played a lot because they’re slightly small (Adidas has a little different shoe measures so I made a mistake buying these without properly tried them in store). Kevin Durant Wingspan

A basketball player who has large wingspan can play taller than his height. Generally european basketball players have shorter wingspans than afro american players.

Various sources (Wikipedia and others) quote that Kevin Durant wingspan is 7′5. Having in mind that average people have the wingspan the same as their height puts Durant in the next category. He is 6′9 (2,06 m) but can definitely play like a center.

See how long Kevin Durant looks in this Nike Commercial:

3-point-release-form

3 point contest 2010 ended with Paul Pierce being the winner. Few days before NBA.com posted this image showing how basketball players release their ball while making 3 point shot.

The key to proper 3 point shooting form is the last touch of the ball. What you have to consider while making 3 pointer in basketball is:

  • Stance. You have to use your legs for powering up and don’t swing on neither side. You must land at the same spot where you took off.
  • Aiming. Try to align your shooting hand with the eye responsible for aiming. This will increase your percentage.
  • Hands. All these 4 players in the picture have a good shooting form. They’re keeping right arm straight and don’t swing elbow to the side. The last most important thing is to use only index and middle fingers at the final moment of ball leaving your hand. You can even wave a bit just like saying goodbye to the ball. This habit should improve your shooters touch and floppiness.

Check back soon to see the full guide on improving 3 point shooting.

Actually the story why basketball was invented sounds kinda funny. In December 1891,  James Naismith, YMCA training school physical education teacher decided to adapt then known children’s game called duck-on-a-rock where small stone is thrown at a made-up duck positioned on the big rock. The aim was to knock off the duck.

James Naismith was told to invent a new game that could be played indoors during cold weather in Massachusetts. So the reason why was basketball invented is really practical one. All basketball fans should be thankful for cold weather in Massachusetts.

Do you know that your perception of distance can be altered by how much you want the goal to be achieved? In one psychology blog I found an article called Motivated reality which explains the bag throwing experiment.

A group of people are throwing bags from a distance as close to gift voucher (target) as possible. Those who know they will get money (have the desire to get money) are throwing bags closer than the target. Those who think it’s just a game  throw bags further than gift voucher.

This psychology experiment concludes that our perception of reality could be directly influenced by our desires. Read the rest of this entry »

Spain found new basketball extreme, Bienvenue Letuni a 15-year-old giant from Democratic Republic of Congo. Bienvenue Letuni already stands at 2.24m (7 ft 4) and is expected to grow even more if his gigantism wouldn’t be treated. He performed some tests for ACB’s Joventut and Baskonia teams and soon will accept offer to train at one or another. Bienvenue Letuni seems to have coordination problems and very weak overall body. If he wants to become a great basketball player he would have to train really hard because now he barely can jump. On the other hand, who needs the vertical jump when you can grab the rim while standing.

Next Manute Bol or another no name in the world of basketball? Bienvenue Letuni will show his real potencial some few years later.

It would be interesting to know how many NBA players shared the same surname during the years.

I love videos from old times so watching some game on Youtube I noticed two players with names Boozer and Allen on their backs. It’s from 1971 when Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul Jabbar dominated the court.

Today probably Carlos Boozer and Ray Allen are better players than these guys.

If you like vintage NBA, here’s a good source to watch some great basketball clips on Youtube.
